The very first 3D printing project I took on – replacement parts for a G1 Optimus Prime
This was about 10 years ago, before I had my own printer. I had recently found my old toy from when I was a child. It was in pretty bad shape, with one leg broken off and a lot of play wear. I got a wild hair, and decided to repair the leg.
With the leg repaired, the figure was still pretty rough, and missing both fists and the blaster. I had recently discovered Shapeways, and already owned a license of Alibre Design so I decided to have a go at making my own parts.
I was very happy with how the parts came out. I figured I wasn’t the only person who’d like to complete an old figure so I created a Shapeways shop and put these up for sale. These were my first item, and they are still there.
In a similar vein, I recently found an old toy, a Matchbox Vehicle Force Voltron. It was in played with condition with typical damage, however it was missing a fist. I decided it was time to rectify this situation and make models for a replacement part.
I wrote up the process as I went through it in a few blog posts:

Omega Supreme – Generation 1
This is a great toy, but has a few well known failure points as well as a number of easy to lose parts.
If your Omega isn’t walking, take a look at this series of posts about how to fix him.
